New York, November 24, 2011 — Manila-based theater company Atlantis Productions Inc.’s Asian premiere of Disney’s The Little Mermaid could have been a spectacular float addition in today’s Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in Times Square.
One shouldn’t wonder at Atlantis’ Disneyesque feat because The Little Mermaid’s co-director, Bobby Garcia (the other director is Chari Arespacochaga), happened to work at Disneyland Hong Kong as its entertainment director when the theme park opened in 2005. Needless to say, working on Disney theatrical materials is second nature to Garcia by now.
The original Broadway production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid, based on the 1989 2D animated film, which boasts the popular songs “Part of Your World,” “Under the Sea,” and “Kiss the Girl,” created by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman, opened at Lunt-Fontane Theatre in 2008 and ran nearly 700 regular performances. Additional 10 songs, co-written by Menken and Glenn Slater, and a book by Tony Award-winning playwright Doug Wright have been incorporated into the stage adaptation, which garnered generally mixed reviews from critics.

Last weekend I found myself, like my nieces and nephews, thoroughly enjoying The Little Mermaid at the Meralco Theater, Pasig. Everything about it — choreography, singing, acting, dialogues, plot and sub-plots, orchestra, sets, costumes, props, special effects, lights — made for great musicale. After presenting recently Next to Normal, Aida and In the Heights, Bobby Garcia and Chari Arespacochaga’s Atlantis Productions does it again.
The Manila staging of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic, as an off-Broadway version of Disney’s hit, runs till Dec. 11. Kids, bring your olds. Singing champions Rachelle Ann Go and Erik Santos debut in professional theater as Ariel and Prince Eric. Watch out too for the performances of stage veterans Calvin Millado as King Triton, Jinky Llamanzares as Ursula, and (my, ehem, inaanak) OJ Mariano as Sebastian.

The Little Mermaid at the Meralco Theatre from November 18 to December 11.
Ang Disney’s The Little Mermaid ay tungkol kay Ariel, isang magandang mermaid na nakatira sa magical kingdom sa ilalim ng dagat. Ariel longs to leave her ocean home to live in the world above. Pero bago niya ito magawa, she has to defy first her father – the king of the sea – to escape the clutches of an evil sea witch at kumbinsihin ang isang prinsipe that she’s the girl with the perfect voice.
Based on one of the most beloved Disney films of all time and the classic Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, Disney’s The Little Mermaid is the sparkling new Disney musical that made a splash on Broadway. Tiyak nang mapapakanta ang mga manonood dahil sa mga sikat na awitin nito tulad ng Part of Your World, Kiss the Girl, and Under the Sea which is an Academy Award-winning Best Original Song and written by the songwriting team of eight-time Academy winner Alan Menken and Howard Ashman.

ERIK SANTOS is understandably on tenterhooks as his first musical play, “The Little Mermaid”, where he plays the Prince, opens tonight at Meralco Theatre. Now a member of the prestigious Star Magic Family, Erik started his career in 2003 after winning in Star in a Million to become the Prince of Pop. But he only went into acting last awit tickeyear in a “Maalaala Mo Kaya” drama episode shot in Macau. Now, he’s tries acting professionally on stage in the Disney musical that’s a certified hit in Broadway. Produced by Atlantis Productions and directed by Bobby Garcia and Chari Arespacochaga, Erik is so excited. “This is definitely a new and different kind of experience for me so I hope my supporters will all watch its run up to December 11.” He himself will produce a special celebrity screening on November 25.
But this doesn’t mean Erik’s going fulltime into theatre musicals as he also ventures into other types of music genres especially in his performances on ASAP Rocks. In his latest album, “Awit Para Sa ‘Yo”, he also explores writing his own songs. He’s overwhelmed by the huge success of his carrier single “Kulang Ako Kung Wala Ka” that dominates the radio airwaves for more than two months now. Its music video also topped MYX for a month. Another hit single titled “Bakit Mahal Pa Rin Kita” also composed by Jonathan Manalo. Erik is also busy preparing for the repeat of his concert “PowER IKons” on November 30, 2011, 8pm at Music Museum with guests Rachelle Ann Go, Bugoy Drilon and Nikki Gil.
