Music piracy has put a strain on the recording industry but there are Filipino singers who have continued to enjoy strong album sales.
The Philippine Association of the Record Industry, Inc. (PARI) was able to keep track of best-selling artists from the “golden age” of hip-hop in the 1990s to the Pinoy pop and rock scene in 2000s.For the past two decades, OPM artists have produced chart-topping hits one after another. From 1990s to mid-2000s, PARI gave Gold Record Awards to albums with 20,000 units sold, Platinum Record Awards to those who reached 40,000 units sold, and Diamond Record Award to albums that reached 400,000 units sold.
However, album sales went down through the years because of the emergence of piracy and digital downloads.
In 2013, PARI adjusted their standards by giving Gold Record Awards to albums with 7,500 units sold, Platinum Record Awards to albums with 15,000 units sold, and Diamond Record Awards to albums that sold more than 150,000 units.
We have listed down OPM artists who have received multiple platinum and diamond record awards through the years (in no particular order).
This list is based on information published on PARI’s official website.
12. Erik Santos
ASAP Champion Erik Santos was dubbed as OPM’s “Prince of Pop” for his achievements in the recording industry. The first Star in a Million grand champion garnered multiple-Platinum records including his debut album This Is The Moment, Loving You Now, The Jim Brickman Songbook, and Awit Para Sa’yo.
Erik Santos marks ten years as ‘King of Theme Songs’
by: Cristina Malonzo
He is a multi-platinum recording artist called the “Prince of Pop.” But what won the hearts of Filipinos is his being the “King of Theme Songs.” Erik Santos has sung the themes of several of the most beloved Pinoy teleseryes and movies.
To mark his ten years of being part of the Filipino teleserye-watching experience, Erik came out with The Erik Santos collection album, “Lahat po ng mga kanta dito naging parte po ng buhay ng mga Pilipino na mahilig manood ng teleserye at ng pelikula.”
For Erik, his most meaningful song in the collection is “Pagbigyang Muli.” He even belted a few but very powerful lines from the song. “Pagbigyang Muli”, according to him, “was my first original song from my very first album.”

Erik Santos doesn’t believe in fixing anything that ain’t broke
MANILA, Philippines—While the term “reinvention” seems to have become a mantra for established artists, to the point that it has been perceived by some as a marketing ploy or an angle, Erik Santos wisely chooses to give his public what they have loved about him from day one.
In his concert series “Greatest Theme Songs” staged at Meralco Theater on Aug. 30 and 31, Erik sang mostly ballads even when there are movie and TV theme songs that have upbeat tempo. Even the songs he recorded for local teleseryes that found their way into the show were arranged close to how we hear them on the boob tube (strings soaring, timpanis swelling from bridge leading to final choruses, etc). Apparently, Erik believes in not fixing anything that ain’t broke, and the audience lapped it up, if only for the artist’s superb vocal command both in terms of technique and expression.
Erik Santos wants to be an icon

Erik Santos wants to be Martin Nievera. Or Gary V. Or, yes, Zsa Zsa or Regine.
Not content being merely the local Prince of Pop following his rise to stardom when he won the ABS-CBN singing competition Star in a Million in 2004, Santos wants to be an icon.
Icon, says the Oxford dictionary, is a person or thing regarded as a representative symbol or as worthy of veneration.
It isn’t easy, he admits.
Especially when the music industry is growing by leaps and bounds and it’s hard enough keeping up with trends and new singers and maintaining one’s popularity, he says.
And then there are contemporaries of equal caliber panting after the same untouchable spot: Christian Bautista, Sarah Geronimo and Rachel Ann Go.
Times have changed
“We’re happy because all of us are able to maintain what we have kung ano man ang nasa career namin,” he tells Yahoo! OMG Philippines at his press conference last week for his PowER IKons concert. “Pero ngayon, hindi ka dapat mangampante kasi ang bilis ng pagpalit, lalo na sa music.”
Then, he says, “Maglabas ka ng isang single, isa, dalawang taon ang airplay. Halimbawang 20 years ka na sa industry, yung kinanta mo mare-recognize pa rin kahit after many years.”
Now, “ang bilis ng change sa music,” he laments. “Kami, masaya na kami ng dalawang or tatlong buwan na airplay sa radio, kase napapalitan kaagad.”
Tribute to icons
This is why PowER IKons, his upcoming concert on August 13 and 18 at the Music Museum pays tribute to the singers he looks up to and who have become icons by their sheer staying power and songs that have become classics.
